Cleaning Out the Closet
The closet is often where things are put that you are not sure of where to put them. It frequently houses things that don’t even belong there. The best way to get the job done, the fastest most efficient way is to pick a day that you feel you can devote to the job. Maybe that rainy afternoon with nothing else on your agenda for the day. Start early enough so you can finish the job in one day.
Let’s start in your bedroom. The first step to take is make your bed and take everything out of your closet and put it on the freshly made bed. Keep in mind that you need to get the job done so you can use your bed when you need to.
You can decide to do the dresser at the same time in the same way, or make the cleaning of the dresser another day using the same format.
Cordon off four spaces on the floor for 4 piles. As you pick up each item, determine which pile it would fit into. Is the item one you love, does it fit well and do you wear it often? This would be your keep pile.
The next pile is the clothes you aren’t sure of. It’s called the maybe pile that you have a hard time deciding about. You sort of like some pieces you paid a lot for and hate to give up something so expensive that you rarely wear. The garment may be beautiful and expensive, but doesn’t fit quite right or feel good on. It may itch. And the scenario goes on, because you are having a hard time giving up some of the pieces and making a decision. In the end, this will be the hardest pile to deal with.
The next pile is for the clothes you know don’t fit well, you may never realistically fit into again, are out of style and you haven’t worn in the last year. These are the clothes you keep sliding back and forth past in your closet when and you are saying to yourself, “I don’t have a thing to wear”.
And the last pile are for those clothes you never wear, even when doing the painting project you saved it for. They are very out of date, need mending, or have stains and not even good enough to donate. This is the pile that gets tossed.
At this point go back to the maybe pile and ask yourself , Would I buy this? Will I wear it often enough to keep it? Why do I rarely wear it? Be brutal with your choices, bite the bullet and let go of the clothes you know in your heart you hardly ever wear it and know that it is just taking up space and cluttering your life. And keep in mind there are a lot of people out there who would appreciate your castoffs and may even be in need of them. Help your self, free your self and help others.
